One of my favorite tips for new thrifters is to keep an open mind! Just because something looks one way on the rack, doesn't mean that you can't change it once you get home to better fit your style. I'm definitely not a fan of shoulder pads (not sure who really is these days) but I don't let their presence stop me from buying a really awesome jacket or blazer! As you can see, removing shoulder pads is quick and easy. :)
